13 Mar “Napping Bay”
This painting gave me some issues I wasn’t thinking about when I first started. I wanted the focal point to be his head, of course. But to place it where I wanted, it looked as though he were being dragged off the canvas by his tail. In order to balance him out, I pushed back the value behind his head. This follows the compositional rule of connecting your darkest values. By doing this, you give the eye a clear path to follow and create “weight” where you most need it.
