“Napping Bay”

“Napping Bay”

7 x 9″  oil/canvas panel

Again, this is “Harley” participating in his favorite sport. Well, second favorite, really. Eating would come first as seen by his waist line!

This painting gave me some issues I wasn’t thinking about when I first started. I wanted the focal point to be his head, of course. But to place it where I wanted, it looked as though he were being dragged off the canvas by his tail. In order to balance him out, I pushed back the value behind his head. This follows the compositional rule of connecting your darkest values. By doing this, you give the eye a clear path to follow and create “weight” where you most need it.
